Rise of Darkness
A promotion is when a Devil changes from its current form to a more powerful form. All devils covet promotions except Asmodeus. Rarely does a soul begin as a Lemure and end up as a Pit Fiend, but it does happen. Promotion is often used as a way to reward faithful servants, or carrot underlings into doing suicidal tasks. Devils are given promotions for fulfillment of tasks and loyalty, with loyalty being favored more, since a newly promoted devil is equal in power to his promoter.
Promotions are used sparingly for two reasons:
- Making an underling more powerful makes them into a new rival for future promotions.
- Creating a newer, more powerful form costs soul-derived energy.
Devils are promoted from one for to the other, very rarely jumping rungs. Least devils are promoted by their lesser devil superiors, lesser by their greater devil superiors, and greater devils by their lord. As a result, no Lordless greater devils are created.
Promotion of one powerful devil is usually accompanied by the demotion of another. As a result, the upper echelons of power are fairly stable. However, a cunning underling can bring about the downfall of his master and elevate himself to that master’s status.
